November 25 Thanksgiving UpdatesThanksgiving was wonderful. I had a two day visit with Dad, my sister, my grandfather, and my aunt and uncle (whom I haven't seen in years). It went fantastic. My sister and I got along extreemely well (no fights). I know this is all thanks to prayer.
Thanksgiving day was very nice. We enjoyed a quiet morning at home, cooking and watching the parade. We had company in the afternoon and had a very pleasant time together. There are stories of disaster recipes. Mom decided to try a few new things: a brined turkey and a new pecan pie recipe. Both were disasters. The pecan pie was absolutely aweful and the turkey didn't cook (not because of the brining, but because of some other things that Mom did in trying to cook it "right"). She cooked it all right...6 hours later and we nuked it in the microwave. Did I mention Mom teaches "HOME EC"? And, we had company (we rarely have company). Mom was mortified. Yeah, it will be a Thanksgiving dinner to remember. I am certain we will laugh about it for ages.
I went shopping with Mom on Friday and had a wonderful time. I got a few good deals and bought a number of really nice new outfits. It was a really nice day. I always look forward to after Thanksgiving shopping with Mom.
I had a great travel to and from. My flights were all on time and everything went well.
Arriving home is another story. I had a bad day yesterday and it was for really no reason at all. I got up in the morning excited about putting up Christmas decorations, turned on the computer and the DSL is done. I called the helpdesk and 1/2 hour later, an appointment was made for a technician to come out and fix it next SATURDAY. That means a week of dial-up, so updates may or may not happen. I was then upset all day about the internet, like that is a reason to be upset and rather than doing what I know to do (GET IN THE WORD), I wallowed in my bad feelings. I did get the Christmas decorations up though.
Today has been a much better day. I went to church service this morning and heard some very good lessons with a strong reminder of where my future lies and a challenge to live as Christ lived...walking out His faith before the people he met every day. I then went shopping and got the fridge stocked, bought a few Christmas gifts, and shorted my list of things I need to buy. I then took a much needed nap. And now, I am sitting in the Coffee shop on the free wireless and have gotten my tickets for my Christmas trip home. Today has been nice. Too bad it's back to the daily grind tomorrow. November 17 Thanksgiving #6A verse to share for Kelli's last day of Giving Thanks.
"And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things in all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. As it is written: "He has scattered abroad His gifts to the poor; His righteousness endures forever." Now He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your stores of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness." - 2 Corinthians 9:8-10
The question is: What will you do with that harvest? Will you share it with others? Or keep it to yourself? November 16 Thanksgiving #5 Today I am thankful for so very many things. But most of all, I am thankful for the overabundance of food that I have available to me. I woke up this morning wondering what I am going to eat, not if I am going to eat. Most of the world does not have this same privilege. We have so many choices and opportunities here in the western world. Most of us don't have to wonder where our next meal is coming from. When I checked my e-mail this morning, I had an e-mail with this link in it. I was really touched by the pictures of children who truly are thankful this Thanksgiving. They know what it is like to not have enough to eat, and because of the work of World Vision, they now know what it is like to be given food and love. This Thanksgiving, my challenge is to remember those who don't have enough, both here and around the world. My challenge is to remember the true reason to be Thankful. This entry is part of Kelli's Thanksgiving Celebration. Go here to join in the fun. November 15 Thanksgiving #4 Once again I join Kelli at No Place Like Home to share some Thanksgiving decorations. I always travel home for the holidays, so I don't usually do much in the way of decorating. This year, I simply added a few things around the house. A harvest tablecloth, a potpourri filled candle holder, a cute harvest doll, and a fall dishtowel. Not much but it is nice looking at my dinning room table and seeing it spruced up. (I am including multiple pictures of the tablecloth - so you can see what it looks like) November 14 Thanksgiving #3 Thought that I would share this Thanksgiving Poem for Kelli's Giving Thanks. I found it today and was reminded of why we, as Christians, celebrate Thanksgiving. Harvesttime Back Home by Kathryn Thorne Bowsher Harvesttime back home! Roast goose, turkey and dressing, Sweet mem'ries those words recall Cranberries, biscuits, sweet corn of the warm and hearty welcome Mincemeat pie! Oh, what blessing, At the old town meeting hall, Feasting together Thanksgiving morn! When good folk, from far and near, Gathered on Thanksgiving Day In the afternoon, When we gladly sat down to dine, Hearts rejoiced in His great love,For fellowship and good cheer, From God's Word, the preacher read Meeting together to eat and pray. How God sent His beloved Son, Jesus Christ, Who died and bled. The hall's old plank floor Rafters rang with joyous song With gold harvest was heaped, As we sang praise to God above, Basking in bright autumn splendor For saving men from sin and wrong Choicest crop that men had reaped By His immeasurable grace and love. Was displayed for all to see, When folks would congregate Blessing fell on all To praise God for rich bounty Within that hallowed place, Thank our Father for food we ate. The revered old meeting hall. Gladness beamed on ev'ry face. Long tables of pine Fed on Manna from above, Held promise of sumptuous fare, From our Father's storehouse rare. Giving thanks to God in prayer --- Worshipping God in song and prayer. November 13 Thanksgiving #2Joining Kelly at There is no place like home once again...this time with a Thanksgiving story.
When I was in the third grade and my sister was in pre-kindergarten, we were homeschooled for half a year. This meant we were taught by my mother until after Christmas when she had to go back to work. I loved being homeschooled and have always wanted to homeschool my children (when I have some of my own). That year we studied (in our curriculum) the first Thanksgiving. We read about Squanto and his adventures with Captain Smith and the pilgrims. To read his story go here. He was a great help to the Pilgrims and was instrumental in allowing the first Thanksgiving to take place. After studying about Squanto and the first Thanskgiving, my sister and I created a scroll telling the story. We then dyed our own clothes and created an Indian costume and a Pilgrim costume. We dressed up for Thanksgiving and told our story to our family before the dinner. It was lots of fun and we learned a lot. I believe I still have the scroll in my box of keepsakes. We used those costumes for dress up long after that Thanksgiving. Because of this wonderful learning experience, I will never forget the story of Squanto and the first Thanksgiving. November 12 Thanksgiving #1I've decided to Join Kelly in her Giving Thanks Celebration. For today's entry I thought I would share my favorite holiday recipe. I spend holidays with my parents and so I don't have a menu for Thanksgiving, however I am responsible for one dish and one dish only. It is my absolute favorite side dish: Corn Pudding. It's easy to make and tastes delicious. Please make the corn pudding exactly the way the recipe reads. You need to use the canned food. We've tried it with fresh and frozen (from the garden) and it is just not as good.
Corn Pudding
1 can whole corn, do not drain
1 can creamed corn
1 cup sour cream
1 stick margarine, melted
2 eggs beaten
1 package cornbread mix
Mix all ingredients together. Put in casserole or baking pan.
Bake at 350º for 1 hour. Yield: 8 servings.
For Christmas add: red pimento and chopped green pepper November 09 My Favorite Necklace Wow, I can hardly believe it's been a week since last Friday's Show and Tell. Well, here I am to participate once again. This time, I wanted to share a wondrous find from last years Annual Exceptional Children's Conference. One of the things I love about this conference are the fifty or so vendors that are there trying to get you to buy their products. I enjoy looking over the educational materials I can't afford and occasionally finding something I can take back to the classroom. There are always a few "personal" vendors as well: selling things like educational T-shirts, Teacher bags, etc. I always pick up a few teacher gifts for Christmas and then look for something new for myself. Sometimes I find something, sometimes I don't. Last year, I made this beautiful find. It is a necklace with a hand that says "I love you" in Sign Language. Now, one of the reasons I like this necklace is that it was made by a woman who is deaf-blind. The ladies who help her place all of the materials for the necklace in a bag and then she puts the necklace together. Each bead is a different size and/or feel so that she knows which beads are the same. All of the necklaces she was selling were very beautiful. The other reason that I love this necklace is because I know some sign language. Now, I don't really know enough to carry on a conversation with someone, but I do know enough that I could make myself understood if need be. And the truth is, I probably know more than I think I do. Anyway, I love this necklace and thought I would share it with you. November 02 The Blessing It's Show and Tell once again and this week I would like to share a recent acquisition. This past weekend my mother came to visit and we went to Old Salem, NC. It is an old Moravian town. The town existed in the 1700's and early part of the 1800's as a working Moravian community (one of two in the US). There is still a large Moravian church fellowship that meets there and the town has been preserved as a historical site. They have many different buildings on display and a lot of the history is told. I was particularly impressed with the simple lifestyle of the Moravians, as well as, some of their beliefs about a person's spiritual walk with the Lord. One of the things that I found was a blessing that the Moravians said at the supper table. I really liked what it said and what it meant to your life. I found a beautiful copy of the prayer and came home, matted it, and hung it in the kitchen. It is a reminder that Christ should be invited to every part of my life and that he gives us daily gifts, if we choose to look for them. During this time of Thanksgiving, I have been particularly impressed upon to look for and find my "1000 gifts". This prayer came at just the right time. I hope that it will bless you as it has blessed me. Come Lord Jesus Bless our loved ones Our Guest to be Everywhere And bless these gifts And keep them in Bestowed by Thee Thy loving care |
